Since 2008 we have been researching and engineering solutions based on Neurosciences that make human emotions digitally readable. Analysts predict that the Affective Computing Market-size will reach 50B€ in 2023*, and we are feeling an active development in the business fields. As we wanted to confirm our observations, we launched a poll on Linked-in last November. Here are the results.

For 69% of the respondents, Emotions Digital Measurement entered their professional radars: global digital transformation, smart mobility, A.I… great ! until now, digitalized emotions were lacking in the value channels. Emotions are keys to deliver great experiences which can be objectively assessed and improved by Cognitive Processing Technologies. They also provide real-time affective data that enable emotional adaptative experiences and empathetic digital features.

Most of the respondents are working in B2B fields. Industrialists, retailers, and brands need smart solutions to better understand their consumers in our era of fast-paced experiences augmented by mobile digital layers. In addition, Market-Research Institutes are required by their clients to digitally transform their methodologies to be better anchored in real-time connected mobility. Seamless digital Emotions measurement offers sharpened insights ti form improved predictions and concrete actionnables. It opens up Industry 4.0 perspectives to produce personalized adaptative experiences that could turn mass-production into sustainable ecological profitability.

Regarding the frequency of emotional measurement in the workplace, 61% declare a business need for an emotional measurement solution they would use 24/7, daily or weekly, and 21% monthly.

Emotional processing systems are technologically based on 3 different scientific fields. 1) Facial coding and vocal processing behavior analyses. 2) Electro-Encephalograms (EEG) processing of the electrical activities of the Central nervous system, and 3) Wearable physiological data processing enabling Autonomous nervous system analysis that directly reveals the Human Affective reactions. Interesting insight, half of the respondents would rather use a Smartwatch or a Smartband for workplace usage.

These technologies reveal our Human intimacy. Should they be considered as a fear or an opportunity? It looks like professionals are mostly considering the positive potential of Affective Computing AI.

In any case, to be widely adopted, Affective Computing Solutions must offer concrete benefits to consumers. The trade-off should be to provide Emotional Intelligence empowerment to end-users. Our vision is that Quantified-Self applications shift from Physical activities tracking and motion-based Analytics to Cognitive and Emotional states measurement and coaching.
